The Cars That Made History

Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR
The Silver Arrows dominated the final years of the Carrera. With direct fuel injection and a sophisticated chassis, the 300 SLR was the most advanced racing car of its era. Its distinctive gullwing doors and silver livery became iconic.

Ferrari 340 Mexico
Named for the race itself, the 340 Mexico was Ferrari's purpose-built weapon for the Carrera Panamericana. Its screaming V12 and blood-red livery made it the most dramatic machine on the road. Three were built specifically for the 1952 race.

Porsche 550 Spyder
The lightweight giant-killer that gave Porsche its 'Carrera' name. With less than half the power of its rivals, the 550 Spyder used agility and reliability to claim class victories. Its success on these roads created a legend that Porsche celebrates to this day.

Lancia D24
Lancia's innovative spaceframe chassis and powerful V6 made the D24 a formidable competitor. Its combination of power and handling suited the varied terrain of the Mexican roads, from desert straights to mountain passes.

Oldsmobile 88
American muscle dominated the early years. The Oldsmobile 88's powerful V8 and rugged construction proved ideal for the demanding conditions. Before the Europeans arrived in force, American iron ruled the roads.
